From June 16–20, 2025, the Guyana Mining School and Training Centre Inc. (GMSTCI) conducted a five-day Responsible Mining Workshop at Citrus Grove, Port Kaituma, in the Northwest Mining District #5. The training brought together 19 miners (5 females, 14 males) who successfully completed the programme.
Led by Instructors Garvin Douglas and Pretima Lall, supported by Interns Ameera Dindayal and Maquica Bart from the University of Guyana, the workshop aimed to strengthen miners’ technical capacity and promote safe, legal, and environmentally responsible mining practices in keeping with Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS).
Participants engaged in a combination of classroom instruction and practical field exercises covering Mining Regulations, Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) at placer mine sites, Map Reading and GPS Navigation, and Small-Scale Prospecting Techniques. These modules equipped miners with essential skills to improve mine planning, enhance safety awareness, and reduce environmental impacts associated with artisanal operations.
The training highlighted that responsible mining is not only about compliance but about empowering miners with the knowledge to operate sustainably and leave a positive legacy for their communities. Participants expressed appreciation for the hands-on training, noting that the GPS and OSH sessions were particularly valuable for improving daily operations in the field.
The workshop showcases GMSTCI’s continued commitment to building national capacity and advancing sustainable mining practices across Guyana’s interior regions.
