Empowering Communities through Training: GMSTCI Conducts Community Mines Ranger Training in Batavia

From July 25 to August 7, 2025, the Guyana Mining School and Training Centre Inc. (GMSTCI) successfully conducted an 8-day Community Mines Ranger Training (CMRT) at Arian Island, Batavia Amerindian Community. The program was facilitated by Mr. Deon Adolf (Instructor II), Mr. Nathan Indarsingh (Instructor I), and Ms. Cindy Evans (Instructor I), and engaged 10 participants, comprising 1 male and 9 females, in an immersive capacity-building exercise designed to strengthen local mining governance.

The CMRT program, a flagship initiative of GMSTCI, focused on equipping participants with the practical skills and regulatory knowledge needed to carry out community-based mining oversight. Through hands-on sessions in Map Reading and Navigation (GPS), Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), and Mining Regulations, participants gained a deeper understanding of how to effectively monitor mining operations, enforce safety standards, and promote environmentally responsible practices within their communities.

The Community Mines Ranger Training forms part of GMSTCI’s broader mandate to build local capacity and promote sustainable mining practices across Guyana’s hinterland regions. By empowering Amerindian Rangers with the tools and knowledge to safeguard their natural resources, the initiative supports inclusive participation in resource management and strengthens community stewardship over mining activities.
